My Favorite Standby Knitting Projects
Everyone has good ole’ standbys that they go to when they can’t figure out what they want. For instance, when we don’t know what to eat, a favorite standby meal in our home is haystacks. When I don’t have anything currently on the needles, and I am trying to figure out what to knit, these are my five favorite standby knitting projects.
- Socks. I love knitting socks because they are portable, affordable (much more so than sweaters) and they make me feel so smart! Who knew a few months after learning to knit, I would pick up double pointed needles and start knitting socks?
- Dishcloths. I love knitting dishcloths too and for many of the same reasons. They are portable, even more affordable, who doesn’t love getting them for gifts? Plus, there are tons of free patterns for dishcloths on the web.
- Hats. Hats are lots of fun to knit. They are reasonably quick and also very portable. Baby hats are probably my favorite and parents love to have a few on hand. My friend even put them on her baby during the summer because of the air conditioning in the house.
- Animals. These I mainly like because of their whimsical quality. People find it amusing that I have knit and stuffed animals. There is a book I would love to get because of some very fun patterns in it.
- Anything that doesn’t require seaming. I will try any pattern that doesn’t have a ton of seaming. I will pick up stitches until the cows come home rather than sew seams. This is also why I love circular knitting as you can see above. The animals are the only exception to this rule and admittedly the worst part of the job for me.

I’m so with you on the seaming! I’m downright lousy at finishing my projects for this very reason. I have I think three bunnies completely knitted but not finished (which also proves I am with you on #4, too!).
I hate seaming too! I have a gorgeous sweater that took me weeks to knit and I just can’t make myself finish seaming! I even prefer grafting to sewing seams.
Okay, I must be mental.
Have you ever tried something like Tempting or Tempting II from Knitty? Whole sweaters with minimal seaming!
I don’t think you are mental. I would much rather do a kitchener stitch than do seams!
Thanks for the sweater ideas!
